An educational course for high-risk road users
Drive Smarta is an educational course designed for drivers who have demonstrated high-risk driving behaviours, including excessive speed and other unsafe or dangerous behaviour on the road.
The course is about more than simply looking at what went wrong. It provides an opportunity to better understand why we make certain decisions behind the wheel, the risks associated with those decisions, and how changing our driving behaviour can make a real difference to our own safety and the safety of others.
The aim of Drive Smarta is to reduce the incidence of speeding and dangerous driving by providing practical information, proven strategies and a greater understanding of road safety.
Understanding the Risks – and Making Better Choices
Why do we sometimes take risks behind the wheel that we wouldn't normally consider elsewhere?
Perhaps you were running late, frustrated by another driver, distracted, or simply didn't realise how much difference a little extra speed could make.
Drive Smarta explores the real-world consequences of speeding and other high-risk driving behaviours. The course looks at factual evidence behind road safety measures and helps participants understand how speed, decision-making and driver behaviour can affect both the likelihood and severity of a crash.
But understanding the risks is only part of the picture.
The course also uses approaches including Motivational Interviewing, Problem Solving and Relapse Prevention to help participants identify the reasons behind their driving behaviour, recognise situations that may lead to poor decisions, and develop practical strategies for making safer choices in the future.
The goal isn't simply to tell you to slow down — it's to help you understand why safer choices matter and how you can make them stick.
Ultimately, Drive Smarta is about becoming a safer, more aware and more responsible driver — for yourself, your passengers and everyone else sharing the road.
There is no cost to attend
Participation in the Drive Smarta course is provided free of charge, with thanks to funding from Road Safety Northland.
